A Cautionary Tale: Navigating the Aftermath of a Home Disaster with Paul Davis Restoration

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

After a fire caused by lightning struck our home, a traumatic event for myself and my five children, we hired Paul Davis Restoration Company, a decision I regret not researching more thoroughly beforehand. From the outset, their approach seemed more profit-driven than focused on delivering quality workmanship.

Throughout the restoration process, it became apparent that their priority was cutting corners and maximizing their earnings rather than ensuring a job well done.

The aftermath of their service left much to be desired. We are now dealing with black mold in our closet due to a leaking showera problem they suggested could be resolved with a mere wipe down, indicating a startling disregard for proper remediation protocols. Further inspection revealed additional issues, including a leak causing damage to the molding in our half bath, forcing us to engage ServePro for cleanup and repair. This subsequent team's professionalism and punctuality highlighted the stark contrast in service quality between the two companies.

Paul Davis's workmanship fell significantly short of acceptable standards.

Their practice of taking frequent smoking breaks, assigning a single individual to paint the entire house, and failing to protect our kitchen furnishings led to extensive and preventable damage. The paint job was subpar, with evidence suggesting the paint was overly diluted, resulting in peeling and cracking doors, paint spills in our garage, and damage to our new floors.

Moreover, their handling of structural repairs was equally disappointing. They installed a wall where there should have been a window and proposed superficial fixes to deeper issues, leaving us to shoulder the burden of proper repairs. Although they charged our insurance for a new concrete slab, it is now marred with paint spills, reflecting a careless approach to our home's restoration.

While some aspects of our home may seem improved, the overall integrity and appearance have suffered.

We're grateful that our insurance company is supportive and will cover the costs of rectifying the damages caused by Paul Davis. My advice to others in similar situations is to seek alternatives. While my experience with ServePro is still ongoing, their initial professionalism and meticulous care have been reassuring. They prioritize cleanliness and attention to detail, a stark contrast to the negligence we experienced with Paul Davis.

In summary, I strongly recommend against hiring Paul Davis Restoration Company.

Their focus on profit over quality, coupled with a lackadaisical approach to workmanship, has resulted in additional stress and financial strain for my family. Instead, consider companies like ServePro, who demonstrate a commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.

We bought our house and our plumbing went so we were referred to Paul Davis for restoration I added an upgrades that came to $900 and I didn't get those upgrades I had a fight for my bar which they finally did but I had to go through my living room to do it. I didn't get my niches but remind you my whole bathroom was tiled with built-in soap dishes that I didn't receive.

They broke my mirror replace it with tile but didn't put exactly the fill of the mirror that they were supposed to do. They crack my light and then said it was crack when we bought the house which it wasn't. The workers didn't speak English and if they did it was very broken or use that as an excuse to avoid the mess. I've asked for certain things and I didn't get what I asked for I had to make several complaints to get what I needed or wanted.

The workers came in and made fun of you and when they came in to check their work they were very rude stating its people like you that can make complaints and aren't happy for work so you could done. Well news flash if you did the work appropriately people wouldn't complain. Your reviews are based on your actions not others.

All I want is a refund and they refuse to give me the refund for the niches I never received when we called they said it was an even put in but I paid for them. Honestly I have to pay someone to fix my bathroom that should have been done right the first time around.

Get the message out to avoid PD at all costs

Paul Davis Restoration - Get the message out to avoid PD at all costs

We had a water pipe burst and flood the house resutling in having our hardwood flooring torn up, drywall removed, and damage to the HVAC resulting in a whole new system there as well as water filled the ductwork and backed up into the furnance.

I had work done by Paul Davis in late 2023 to replace the flooring, which we purchased separately. Thankfully we still had tile to replace the bathroom tile and as we were already painting I had plenty of paint.

We paid half the estimate up front and when work was completed requested a full itemized list. They never provided the actual final list, even though I reached out several times to close it out. They finally provided a bill in mid-February 2024. The final bill included 8K more than previously stated and items that were never provided or included in the restoration such as the purchase of marble, new flooring, bathroom vanity, etc.

I have been trying to reach them, but they do not return the calls, and they are now threatening a lien.

Work was not fully complete, and I had to hire another contractor to finish the trim work, and another contractor to fix the texture and repaint.

The initial job project lead was great, but dealing with the office has been horrible. She is rude, unresponsive, and threatening.

I strongly recommend that people avoid this company.

I will state that the crew was respectful, and worked hard, but that does not make up for the management at all.

Paul Davis Restoration - Constant tears and a nightmare

inferior work

ZERO communication during the week and when I could reach them on a weekend, got severely blasted and insulted for disturbing them.

I am the homeowner, but did not listen to ONE WORD I said. Just blew me off and said they were doing it their way.

(No LIE) Cried to state farm, no good results, said I had to work with these people who were not listening and neither did my insurance company.

Did my own repairs that cost $5000. (Been a year, still paying for that) Not all repairs are completed yet (still a year later), I am on a limited budget.

Not one ENGLISH speaking person on the premises - EVER! Ask a question, just get a smile because they had no clue what I was saying. Asked them to be called off my roof and barred all future Paul Davis people from my property, but they got ALL the MONEY.

My first time around the block, if it ever happens again I will hire my own people, which is what I have had to do anyway.

Still working on it because the rest of my life couldn't stop just for this.

Did not pull proper permits and asked by marion county to file a complaint for not getting a permit for aspects of the work.

I have absolutely no confidence in phone sent photos for inspection.

Inspections by state farm parties who royally messed things up and left it that way, i.e. tarps I paid $400 to protect the roof until it could be properly repaired,

Did not use the quality materials we agreed upon, which were already inferior to what I had. They will give all kind of excuses and it will be the homeowners fault and the homeowners existing status. No excuse for not doing promised work.

Congratulations for making out like bandits. Any good reviews must have come from cousins.

And I know for a fact they hire inferior cheap people because I ran across a few more of them.

Bar none, one of the worst experiences of my life and it didn't have to be. Horrible people who threatened me with liens as did their inferior hires.

Roof replaced

Great experience from start to finish when my roof was replaced. Chris, my contractor from Paul Davis was knowledgeable, patient and very helpful, walking me through what was needed and what would be done to replace my roof.

He also worked well with my insurance company. . He oversaw everything and I had no worries! Weeks after my roof was replaced, I needed some information for my HOA.

I contacted Chris and he sent me the information I needed- no problems!

My roof looks great, the room that needed repainting was also done in a timely matter and also looks beautiful. I would definitely recommend Paul Davis- already have recommended to my neighbors.

Horrible Experience

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Paul Davis was the company selected by my home insurance provider, Progressive. (It was my first claim ever, so I did not know any better) The remediation part of my job (water damage caused by my leaking refrigerator line) was ok, but the restoration was a complete NIGHTMARE.

My insurance approved floor replacement quickly, and Paul Davis subcontracted the job to a flooring company that did a terrible job. I tried to get the floors fixed to resemble anything close to how they looked before the water damage, but was never "made whole".

Eight months passed and the job was never completed. A lot of employee turnover at the company - every time I called or emailed for an update there was a new project manager - all of them equally awful - and no one ever seemed to have a straight answer on how to resolve my concerns.

They are dishonest and do terrible work

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

While doing demo for water damage They cut a cable for my new in wall speakers, it's never been fixed. They were paid by our insurance to replace the light cans in the ceiling and I caught them just drying the old ones out and complained about it they said that I agreed to this, they painted the walls white while I was at work and said that there Painter recommend it because it would look better.

They had to repaint and still did the wrong color. They used my pool table as a workbench and then denied it. I have pictures on my security camera. They moved the pool table and never put it back.

They were paid by our insurance to move furniture.

I could go on and on. What a nightmare.

Mold Inspection

Jason Peters Mitigation Manager came to my rental property to inspect it for mold after my tenant paid for an estimate from a different company. The company hired by my tenant didn't test for mold/moisture only a visual inspection was done.

He was unaware that the other company's estimate was for over $ 4,000 worth of remediation and additional monies for HVAC cleaning. Jason was professional, courteous, and detailed in his inspection carefully going through each area of the home. The inspection showed no sign of mold - he suggested HVAC and vent cleaning. Much different than the original company.

I would highly recommend Paul Davis - he has my trust.

His suggestions and his honesty during this free inspection were refreshing. Thank you!

HELP OTHERS FROM A DISHONEST CONTRACTOR

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Paul Davis Restoration - HELP OTHERS FROM A DISHONEST CONTRACTOR

I wish I would have seen a huge advisor to KEEP AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND ALL PARTIES INVOLVED WITH THEM!!! They are thieves!!!

Charging my insurance company for stuff they didn't do. Charging me for things outside of what the Insurance company authorized. (that I did not agree to). Several of my personal things went missing, as well as household items, Sink, Faucet, Garbage Disposal, Outlets, remotes to fans, light, ect....USAA has them on a Contractor List, my unfortunate and very unpleasant experience to have had them come up on rotation for the repairs to my home.

What was supposed to be a simple Roof , floor and paint job turned out to be anything but....

The "Project Manager" or lack thereof was never there to oversee the work that was being performed. My kitchen cabinets were destroyed along with the walls and electrical that I had just done and permitted. Paul Davis did work without the proper Permits. I was left to pay for Fines from the city for work performed without a permit.

Gordon the owner is a liar and he stated that my home received several coats of paint (4) to be exact.

I have video showing their workers only doing 2 and not even a good job at that. I had to hire another painter to come in a fix and repaint all the walls in the house, to include all the baseboards that were painted black and in doing so stained the bottom of the white walls and new TIle.... The paint started peeling all along the baseboard area. And in various spots.

You can clearly see where a paint brush never touched the walls!!! You might as well forget about mentioning this to the owner Gordon as he does not give to *** about the workmanship, he just wants to charge the insurance companies and YOU for shady work being performed. I come and post this with all the PROOF and will post in due time to expose this thief!!! The Sub-Contractors he deals with have said nothing nice or good about him/company.

One contractor that I had to call to come out and finish the work that he was paid by the Insurance company to do, advised he was unaware that Paul Davis was using his company to pull permits. Under!! What?! Then I had to pay this subcontractor out of my own pocket.

That happened with 2 other subcontractors. IF YOU DON'T AGREE OR ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE WORK, WELL YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK... HE WILL PLACE A LIEN ON YOUR HOUSE!!! Instead of being an honest person and come to you to fix whatever you are unhappy with, he chooses the dishonest way out.Grab your money and go.

The aftermath of what was done to my home and family, I would not wish on ANYONE. PLEASE, I strongly suggest you heed my WARNING. Anyone needing proof before I expose this companies crooked practices can email me, apraolovesbullies@***.com. I'd be more than happy to share what I have.

His motto for his business is purely fictional., He is not helping anyone but himself to your money!

You are a bad bad person Gordon Berken, you know what you did to my home and family, shame on you!!!!! You will either learn from this and straighten your company and work ethics, or I hope your business closes so you can't do this to anyone else!!!!

I, in current litigation with Paul David Restoration, heres part of my story,, Please stay away from this company Fire was in January 2020 I 've had 3 year's worth of *** with Paul Davis. They lie they are scammers, and I've caught them several timesthroughout this process and called them out on it.

I've also told (the insurance carrier Paul Davis and I agreed there's to be credit for things not done. After hours of sitting down going through things they gave me credit for $9000. I added up over $30000. Worth of things not done.

They are trying to make me pay for things they didn't do, They are trying to take the depreciation, taxes and out of pocket expenses part of things they didn't do. They're lying l and I'm not and haven't been and have been contacting 3 different people at the well known insurance company and told them all the issues and they didn't care, with all the photo evidence that I have provided them. Paul Davis is doing insurance fraud, I have pictures and evidence and I've shown all of this to both companies for the last year and things still aren't done right. Then I get in the house after reconstruction after a fire, my kid n I were here for 4 days getting really sick, turns out we called the WE energies and the house was leaking c02 and we've been poisoned because Paul Davis said it passed inspection but won't give me proof and WE energies guy said he doesn't know how that passed inspection. There was a 7 inch round holein the chimney that wasn't covered after servicing the furnace and the exhaust for the water heater was run to thechimney out the hole back into the house, we were sick for couple weeks and went to emergency room.

And so many other similar things have been going on. They are lying saying things are up to code, but they are not, insurance paid out for them to upgrade to code n they are trying to make me pay them. I don't think the contract is valid, when I signed I was the poa of my mom, she passed away back in April, Also things like insulation in the attic insurance paid out for it they didn't put it in and they trying to get me to paythem for material and depreciation value, the walls were paid out for putting plaster over the drywall the plaster they bought was sitting here until the job was completed n the painters took all 30 40 bags with them . I have picture proof of the plaster sitting in bags after walls were done.

They didn't prime the walls and paint chips off easy and you bump the walls and it leaves a gouge. there's screws backing out . paint and tape bubbling out in every room, new cabinets with gouges in them. Paul Davis told me it's not a big deal, windows are drafty and you cant get the screens out easily and they don't fit properly.

I have no outdoor lighting that existed prior to the fire the electrician refuses to rewire. The breaker box things are labeled wrong. Furnace should have it's own breaker but it's connected to a bedroom, the electric . At one time it wouldn't pass code so electrician came and put a blank plate over the non working outlet for it to pass inspection and they were going to leave it that way until I complained.

There are items like shelves and stuff that my mom had that I didn't want rebuilt or replaced Paul Davis is trying to charge me for that as well just everything has gone wrong. Every step of the way has been a fight with them. Every time they sent me an invoice the main price goes up a few thousand dollars from one day to the next. the original price was $107000.

then it went up to 112000. I received a statement one day for the $112000. and the very next day sent me an edited one and the amount changed now to $115000. The person's I've been working with at Paul Davis are Kristian and Justin.

I need help I've paid them $30000. so far then they asked me what do I want from the company, and I wrote I want Paul Davis (Kristian) to refigure what they think I owe them. The latest list they sent me only included a few items of the hundreds of items we sat and agreed upon. I would like them to go off the list that I previously sent them.

I want them to understand they aren't getting the depreciation value the taxes and the out of pocket expenses for the things they didnt do. I want them to know the items I purchased and installed myself they are not getting the taxes out of pocket or depreciation value for any of it. let them know as I've told them before to stop trying to put one over on me because I know exactly what they are trying to pull. what you just read was written back on January 8, 2021 Here's the latest On December 11, 2020 I basiclly fired them, i took the key out of the lock box and explained I wanted to be done with them.

PDR told me There was a document I needed to sign in order for the insurance company to close their account and release the rest of the funds they were holding. I signed that paper, I didnt get a copy of it. I thought It was no big deal it was just for the insurance. There wasnt Much writing and I read it all.

After the co2 poising I demanded Paperwork for the results of this house passing code. and I also told him I want a copy of the document I previously signed. He came up with excuses as to why there are no documented paperwork to prove the home had passed all codes. When he sent me the document he said I signed.

It had way more writing on it, at the top it stated that It was the certificate of complete satisfaction. there were other paragraphs in there, stating how I am goin to pay pdr all the money and that the work was complete to my satisfaction and a paragraph about a one year warranty with them.. all of this was not on there. I told pdr in email they know I wouldnt have signed that and i told them they tricked me into signing that paperwork, at the time I didnt know how they tricked me.

Later I told their attorney that they tricked me into signing that paperwork. we went to court, I am representing myself, because i cant get a lawer, I tried and as soon as I mentioned PDR they were like NOPE cant help you. so the court date to decide if I have to Pay them 72,671.04 I had mounds of evidence but the judge wasnt hearing it because he told me you signed that document. and ordered me to pay them, I paid them, I am counter suing them so I had another court date, while I was getting my evidence ready, I noticed that most of that writing that I dont recall being on that paperwork was all crooked.

I put lines on the document and sure enough what I remember being on the page, and our signatures and my address were all straight, but theres 5 paragraphs that are crooked, they added this after I signed the document. also after close inspection my signature has some normal looking writing, mixed with blurry writing, also, all the hand writing and the signatures except mine were in blue pen, Not only did they provide the court with crooked paperwork, the font is all changed to bold, and all the blue ink is now black. I tried to get another attorney, they said they couldnt help me that the court had made its decision and its nearly Impossible to get a judge to over turn a previous decision. I thought screw them, I decided to write the Judge a letter explaining this newly found evidence that this document has been tampered with, I sent him how i discoverd the evidence, I also told him that I was not happy with the work that was completed i was not satisfied, emails of me telling PDR and their attorney's stating that they tricked me into signing those documents.

I have a contract attorney from earler on in this process stating that PDR work signifiganly incomplete compared to their contract and confirmed that close to 40,000.00 worth of stuff was not completed. I sent it to the Judge and He set a date for Him to reevaluate his past decision in light of the new evidence of document tampering.. Their attorney said Well that Is closed and paid off long ago,,, I told her that This was just discovered, Judge told her he is looking into this. so we got a date set for that , I also have a date to start the process of a jury trial, going after them for a slue of things, the biggy is emotionally and mentally what they have done to me and how this effects my everyday life and will as long as i live in this house.

I dont want to move out this is my parents home, unfortunetly my mom passed away in the fire. I've got my presentation and evidence all ready for trial. I'm thankful that I didnt listen to the last attorney and just chalk it up to a loss. That said attorney, I had left her a message telling her i got the judge to reconsider his past decision, and she wants on board now..

My son and I agreed that she dosnt have enough UMPF or motivation to win for me. she gave up on me. I didnt quit,, Ive done all this work, I have been filing papers on my own to the courts. This is my baby, and to trust someone else to tell my story just because she has a title of being an attorney dosnt make her good.

so I will be representing myself.. I believe PDR and their attorney's are *** their pants. Screwing with a document is a serious crime. and they can try and smooth talk their way through this, but what's on black in white in front of all of them Is something they can talk you out of seeing..

I will prevail and prove PDR is a dirty company.. wish me luck,,, and stay clear from this company

they pulled the same *** on me. court ordered me to pay them because i signed their certificate of complete satisfaction...

But I didn't,, I have proof that they added paragraphs to that page after i signed it. Everything they added was crooked while our signatures and a few other things were straight on the page. I sent the Info and proof to the Judge. and He has reopened the case to reevaluate his past decision.

I am also counter suing them because they told us the house was safe and passed all inspections, we were here for 5 days, we were nauseated, sleepy, wierd headaches.. then the vommiting and tasting metal in our mouth started. I new right away co2 poisioning, I called the gas company they came out and yes it was positive for co2. the people that worked on the furnace and chimmney forgot to reseal 4 cantalope sized holes in the chimmney, so all the fumes that were to go up and out through the chimmney was coming into the house.

they also didnt do 40,000.00 worth of the work they contracted to do. Im also in a cold weather climate. they didnt put batt insulation in the attic as they were paid to do.. they also put in windows that are reccomended for down south weather, and I have to put plastic up over all the brand new windows.

I had to fight to get the jet tub they were paid to replace. they got a 400.00 tub instead, telling me the reason they ordered a regular tub was because no one takes baths anymore. they were going to pocket the near 3,000.00 they were paid to replace. I did get my jet tub but it was with a fight.

I have 2 bow windows in the house at the time of the fire. they order windows, they are delivered and they are all flat, i asked wheres my bow windows, and they told me that their workers were not comforatable installing bow windows, and that the straight windows are a much cleaner look, t they tried to get me to pay upfront the cost of an upgrade for both windows. The insurance paid out 2,000. per bow window, they tried telling me insurance was only provididing them with 575.00 per window and id have to pay the difference.

of 2,000.00 . I do have my bow windows but it was me who had to call the window company, who i found out specialized in bow and bay windows, I guess all their windows come flat, and you have to bend and shape them to make them bow. My lord...

the job estimation time was 4 months to complete, I fired them after 12. my advice is stay away from this company
